Presents Public Seminar
"Quantum Day"
Date: Wednesday, March 8, 2023,
Time: 02:30 PM – 04:00 PM
Location: Bldg. 22, Room 132
Title: Quantum Leap: From Classical to Quantum Computing
Speaker:
Dr. Muhamad Felemban
Asst. Professor
Computer Engineering Department
Abstract:
Quantum computing is an emerging field that exploits the quantum phenomena to perform operations on data. The goal of quantum computing is to find quantum algorithms that are significantly faster than classical algorithms solving the same problem. In this talk, the speaker will explain the basic elements of quantum computation and the advantages they offer from a computer science perspective. In addition, the speaker will talk about the myths and misconceptions about quantum computing. Finally, the speaker will discuss the state-of-the-art technologies and applications of quantum computing and the challenges of building scalable quantum computers.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Muhamad Felemban is the director for the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Intelligent Secure Systems at KFUPM. He is also an assistant professor in the Computer Engineering Department. He earned his BSc in Computer Engineering from KFUPM, in 2008; his MSc in Computer Science form KAUST in 2011; and his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, USA, in 2018. His research interest includes cybersecurity, data security and privacy in data management, application of Machine learning in cybersecurity, and quantum computing. He has developed several courses including Cloud and Edge Computing, Data Privacy, and Quantum Computing.
Title: Secure and Compressed Linear Network Coding, Towards Quantum-Safe Applications
Speaker:
Dr. Anas Abu-Daga
Post-Doctoral Fellow
IRC-ISC, KFUPM
Abstract:
Herein, the problem of random linear network coding (RLNC) coefficients vectors is revisited. Existing studies have either compressed or encrypted the coefficients vectors to achieve either high throughput or secure confidential communication. Instead, we propose a compressed and secure coefficients vector based on modular arithmetic, prime numbers, and influenced by the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT), that achieves both confidentiality and high throughput at once. From the compression perspective, the proposed scheme successfully addresses all the shortcomings of previous methods, including restrictions on generation size and packet density, recoding on intermediate nodes, and creating innovative coding vectors. From the security perspective, the scheme incorporates information theoretic and computational security, resulting in efficient hybrid solution that achieves complete confidentiality, with minimal cryptographic computations. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme in terms of coefficients overhead ratio, download time, throughput, packets drop rate, and cryptographic computations overhead.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Anas Abu-Daga received his MSc in Computer Networks and PhD in Computer Engineering from Computer Engineering department at KFUPM in 2015 and 2020, respectively. Since September. 2022, He has started to work as a postdoctoral fellow at the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Intelligent Secure Systems at KFUPM. His research interest includes coding theory, P2P networking & Blockchain, post-quantum cryptography & cybersecurity, and quantum computing. He has developed and taught a cybersecurity course for prep and high school students in the summer of 2021 and 2022.
